Libourne's vineyards

A large range of vineyards

Libourne's vinyards are located around the city, on the right bank of the Dordogne river. They are popular in the Bordeaux wine region. Libourne's vineyards have many different characteristics which make them unique among the other Bordeaux vineyards. The layout is different from the  Bordeaux vineyards, and is rather similar to those of Bourgogne : the wine rows are dense and compact.

Libourne's viticulturists grow special grape varieties for red wine. Indeed, the frost of 1956 forced them to renew their grape varieties. That's why the Cabernet Sauvignon was replaced by Merlot and Cabernet Franc. Besides, the soils of our region are highly diverse but most of them are clayed, which is favourable to the growing of  Merlot grape variety.
Libourne wines can be kept several years (and they will improve over the years). They are complex and vintage wines. However, they have flavor development which is faster than the ones from Medoc. Ours is a renowned wine region because of the successful Pomerol and Saint Emilion, making  the city of Libourne the second best among the  Bordeaux vineyards.

With the sixteen guaranteed quality label (AOC) Libourne offers a large choice of wine :

  • The AOC of Saint Emilion and Saint Emilion Grand Cru
  • The appellations called "satellites" of Saint Emilion : Saint Georges-Saint Emilion, Montagne -Saint Emilion, Puisseguin -Saint Emilion, Lussac Saint Emilion.
  • Pomerol and Lalande de Pomerol
  • Fronsac and Canon-Fronsac
    Bordeaux and Bordeaux-Supérieur
  • Côtes de Castillon
  • Côtes de Francs
  • Graves de Vayres
  • Saint Foy-Bordeaux

Feel free to cycle or hike to our wine cellars all located in our extraordinary hilly sites.
