The Lalande de Pomerol AOC area, which is a neighbour of Pomerol and Saint Emilion, lies a few kilometres to the north of Libourne d covers the communes of Lalande de Pomerol and Neac. Lalande de Pomerol wines are derived from three grape varieties that are typical of the Bordeaux region: Merlot, which contributes roundness and subtlely, cabernet Franc, which gives the wine its body and a very rich bouquet, and finally Cabernet Sauvignon, which produces full-bodied and very aromatic wines with a fine colour and good ageing potential. It is the blending of these wines that gives rise to the great wines of Lalande de Pomerol. They are generous, vigorous, and velvety with a beautiful ruby colour, sometimes with tile red tints depending on their age. When the time comes to enjoy them, Lalande de Pomerol wines always delight drinkers with their unique richness. The motto of the Lalande de Pomerol winegrowers is "Cordi habeo" or "I have it in my heart to". The Maison des vins du Syndicat de Lalande de Pomerol is open all year round mondays to thursdays 9.00 to 12.00 and 13.30 to 18.00, and on fridays mornings from 9.00 to 12.00. Situated half-way between Bordeaux and Libourne, the "Maison du vin" in Graves de Vayres welcomes visitors all year round. This association of wine producers features wines from around thirty estates, all sold at ex-cellar prices. During the quaternary period the river Dordogne overflowed, forming terraces by erosion on its left bank and bringing to the surface gravel, siliceous stones which contribute smoky and grilled notes to the wine. These wine growing lands were selected in 1931 to make up the Graves de Vayres appellation which was first mentioned in 18th century literature. In gallo-roman times the roman emperor Octavius decided that the place held strategic importance both because of the Dordogne and the roman road between Bordeaux and Perigueux. He assigned the garnison to one of his lieutenants, Varius, from which the name Vayres is derived. Taking full advantage of this terroir, red Graves de Vayres wines are chiefly made from fruity and supple merlot blended with cabernets. Cabernet sauvignon gives them body and structure, cabernet franc subtlely and elegance. White Graves de Vayres wines are produced from three typically Bordeaux grape varieties. For the most part made from a blend of sauvignon and semillon, they are fresh and aromatic and superbly round on the palate. producers offer a wide array of whites, which varies from estate to estate: from pure sauvignons with lively, citrus aromas to pure semillons, sometimes aged in casks, that are supple and big. The latter are perfect with white meat and fish and sauce dishes. Visit the Graves de Vayres Maison du vin where a free tasting will introduce you to Graves de Vayres wines, if you wish. Price information: red Graves de Vayres between €4.50 and €14. White Graves de Vayres between €3.70 and €8.50.
